    Law Fair Tips

Attending a law school fair or LSAC Forum is a wonderful way to meet representatives from law schools across the country and learn more about what makes each school unique.  Below are some tips to help you navigate a law school fair.

    Before the Fair:

    • Look at the event directory. Look at the directory to find out which schools are attending so you can spend your time efficiently speaking with those schools.

    • Make labels. Print out labels with adhesive backs that include information such as your name, address, phone number and email address. You can affix the labels on the law school’s information cards. Fairs can be busy and using labels ensures you can spend more time speaking with the admissions officers and that your contact information is clear and concise.

    • Prepare a list of questions. Asking questions is how you make certain the school is a match for you. Examples of question topics include: academic concentrations, clinic/externship offerings, faculty reputation, student life, facilities, cost of attendance, and financial aid.

    The Day of the Fair:

    • Give yourself plenty of time to find the event and locate the schools you want to speak with.

    • Visit your preferred schools first. Be sure to visit the schools most important to you so you have plenty of time to get all of the information you need. If there is time left in the fair, stop by some schools you may not have been considering; you may be pleasantly surprised.

    • Be prepared to answer questions. Admissions officers may ask questions such as “Why do you want to go to law school?” or “When do you want to start?” Make sure to think of answers to these questions beforehand.

    • Ask for their business card. This is your opportunity to network with the admissions officer. Be sure to ask for their business card, viewbook, and any other information you would find helpful.

    • Participate and enjoy. It is always important to make a good impression, but remember, this is not an interview. The admissions officers want you to ask questions about their schools. Take advantage of the one-on-one contact.

    After the Fair:

    • Follow-up with an email to the law school representatives you had interesting conversations with or if you have additional questions.  Establish a relationship with those from schools to which you are interested in applying.

    • Arrange to visit the schools you put on your "short list".  Going on a tour and sitting in on a class are important parts of your decision making process.
